Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service at the Peki Fire Station have rescued seventeen victims involved in a fatal road traffic accident at Woadze near Kpeve along the Kpeve–Asikuma road in the Volta Region.
According to the Fire Service, the tragic incident occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026. Emergency responders received a distress call at approximately 7:58 PM and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene.
The accident involved a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle with registration number GR 8231 C, which was travelling from Abotuase in the Volta Region to Ningo in the Greater Accra Region. Reports indicate that the vehicle was carrying a total of twenty passengers, including eleven men, five women and four children.
The impact of the crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle, leaving several passengers trapped inside the wreckage. Fire officers from the Peki Fire Station worked swiftly to rescue and extricate the victims.
In total, rescue personnel successfully pulled out thirteen adults and four children from the damaged vehicle.
However, the accident claimed the lives of three adults — two men and one woman — bringing the death toll to three.
Officials from the Ghana Police Service, specifically the Kpando Divisional Command, together with personnel from the Ghana National Ambulance Service from Afadjato and Juapong, assisted in transporting both the injured victims and the deceased to the Kpando Government Hospital and Peki Government Hospital.
The injured are currently receiving medical attention while the deceased have been deposited for preservation and further investigations.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has once again appealed to motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations, avoid reckless driving and excessive speeding, especially on major highways, in order to reduce the increasing number of road crashes across the country.
