Adwoa Safo "responding positively" to treatment, Kwadwo Safo family says, as statement details events leading to shooting

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, is in a stable condition and responding positively to medical treatment following a shooting incident that occurred over the weekend, according to a statement issued by the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

The statement, signed and dated June 22, 2026, expressed the family's gratitude for the support, prayers, and concern shown by members of the Kristo Asafo Mission, relatives, and the general public following what it described as an unfortunate and disturbing incident.

The family assured the public that Adwoa Safo's condition has improved significantly and that she remains under medical care.

Beyond providing an update on Adwoa Safo's health, the family used the statement to address the ongoing leadership dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission, which it says formed the backdrop to the events leading to the shooting.

According to the family, Adwoa Safo is the officially recognized Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family following directives issued by the late founder before his passing.

The statement explained that in 2017, Apostle Kwadwo Safo appointed his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, as his successor to oversee the church and its business operations.

However, the family alleged that during Israel Safo's tenure, several businesses within the Kristo Asafo conglomerate experienced significant decline, with some collapsing or nearing collapse. It further claimed that key doctrines and foundational principles established by the church founder were altered during that period.

The family also alleged that Israel Safo increasingly exercised authority independently, without proper regard for the founder's guidance and wishes.

The statement revealed that after observing these developments, Apostle Kwadwo Safo reportedly revoked Israel Safo's leadership mandate in 2024.

According to the family, the founder subsequently amended the church's succession framework, removing provisions that previously recognized Israel Safo as successor and expressly excluding him from future leadership of the mission.

The late apostle then appointed Adwoa Safo as Head of the Family and entrusted her with responsibilities relating to the family's affairs and legacy.

Following Apostle Kwadwo Safo's death on September 11, 2025, the family said Adwoa Safo has continued to carry out those responsibilities with the support of her siblings and has remained the principal representative of the family.

The family alleged that recent tensions escalated after Israel Safo, together with some church elders, attempted to organize a private installation ceremony to formally declare himself leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

According to the statement, the planned ceremony was contrary to the succession arrangements established by the late founder.

The family said that upon learning about the intended installation, two church members initiated legal proceedings and secured a court application aimed at restraining the event.

However, efforts to serve the legal documents on Israel Safo reportedly proved unsuccessful.

The statement said that on June 21, 2026, Adwoa Safo personally attempted to serve the court documents on her younger brother.

During that encounter, the family alleged that Israel Safo discharged a firearm multiple times in her direction and instructed individuals present at the scene to open fire on her vehicle.

The matter has since been reported to law enforcement authorities, and investigations are ongoing.

The family emphasized that it does not recognize any installation, appointment, or declaration of leadership involving Israel Safo that contradicts the wishes and directives of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

It further distanced itself from any actions undertaken by Israel Safo in relation to the affairs, assets, leadership, or operations of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

The statement warned members of the public, business partners, and stakeholders to exercise caution in any dealings involving Israel Safo on matters connected to the mission or the family.

According to the family, any individual who chooses to engage with him regarding such matters does so at their own risk.

The family disclosed that several issues involving Israel Safo remain under review and stated that it reserves the right to pursue all available legal remedies to protect the wishes, assets, and legacy of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo.

It also stressed that, apart from Israel Safo, all the late apostle's children remain united and committed to ensuring a peaceful and dignified burial for their father.

The statement concluded by appealing to members of the Kristo Asafo Mission, supporters, and the general public to remain calm and allow the appropriate state institutions to investigate the incident and address all related matters through due process.
