Six die in three separate crashes in the Volta Region

At least six people have lost their lives while 34 others were rescued following a series of road traffic accidents across the Volta Region on Sunday, June 21, 2026, prompting swift emergency interventions by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The incidents, which occurred at different locations within the region, involved commercial and private vehicles and left several passengers injured, highlighting growing concerns over road safety on some of the country's major highways.

According to the GNFS, firefighters and rescue personnel were deployed immediately after distress calls were received, enabling dozens of victims to be rescued and transported to nearby health facilities for treatment.

The most severe of the incidents occurred along the Todome stretch near Kpeve on the Peki–Kpeve Road, where personnel from the Peki Fire Station responded to two separate crashes after receiving an emergency call at 12:53 GMT.

One of the accidents involved a MAN Diesel TGS truck with registration number GT 9993-18, travelling from Tema to Tamale, and a Toyota Camry with registration number GE 735-14, which was travelling from Nkwanta to Accra.

Fortunately, all five occupants involved in the collision, made up of four males and one female, had already been rescued before fire officers arrived at the scene.

Although both vehicles sustained significant damage, no fatalities were recorded in that crash.

However, a second accident at the same location proved more tragic.

The crash involved a Metro Mass Transit bus with registration number AS 4984-09 that was travelling from Accra to Dambai with 28 passengers on board.

Firefighters quickly commenced rescue operations and successfully extricated 24 passengers, comprising seven males and seventeen females, from the wreckage.

The injured victims were transported to the Peki Government Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Sadly, four people — one male and three females — died at the scene before rescuers could save them.

Their bodies were later handed over to the Ghana Police Service for preservation and further investigations.

In a separate incident, personnel from the Ho Regional Fire Headquarters responded to another road traffic accident near the Ho Civic Centre shortly after receiving a distress call at 13:04 GMT.

The rescue team, led by Assistant Divisional Officer II (ADO II) Seth Sarfo, arrived at the scene within two minutes and immediately began emergency operations.

The crash involved three vehicles: a Hyundai Mighty truck with registration number GE 342-11, a Pragya tricycle with registration number 26-VR 455, and an unregistered motorbike.

Rescue officers managed to save ten victims who sustained varying degrees of injuries during the collision.

The injured persons were transported to the Ho Municipal Hospital and the Ho Teaching Hospital for urgent medical care.

However, follow-up reports from the hospitals later confirmed that two male victims succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment, bringing the total number of deaths recorded from the day's accidents to six.

The Ghana National Fire Service has been commended for its prompt response, which helped save dozens of lives and prevented further casualties.

The incidents underscore the critical role played by emergency responders in managing road traffic emergencies and ensuring timely medical intervention for accident victims.

Road safety experts have meanwhile reiterated calls for motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads, particularly on busy highways where speeding, reckless overtaking and poor road conditions continue to contribute to accidents.

The latest accidents add to growing concerns over the frequency of road crashes in Ghana, especially involving commercial transport vehicles.

Stakeholders have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of road traffic regulations, improved driver education, regular vehicle maintenance and enhanced road infrastructure to reduce fatalities.

Authorities are expected to conduct investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accidents to determine their causes and recommend measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As families mourn the loss of their loved ones, officials are urging all road users to prioritise safety and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to help reduce the country's rising accident rate.
