The Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ya-Na Abukari II, has passed away, ushering one of Ghana's oldest traditional kingdoms into a period of mourning.
The death of the revered monarch was officially announced on Monday, July 13, 2026, by the Head of the Dagbon Kingmakers, Kuga Naa Adam Abdulai II, following the performance of customary rites at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.
In keeping with centuries-old Dagbon tradition, the announcement was preceded by the sounding of the traditional talking drum and the observance of sacred customary rituals, signalling the passing of the Ya-Na to the people of the kingdom.
Traditional authorities have begun preparations for the burial of the late overlord, which will be conducted in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Dagbon Kingdom.
The funeral rites are expected to attract traditional leaders, government officials, religious figures and mourners from across Ghana to pay their final respects to the late king.
