Defence Chief calls for renewed discipline to strengthen Ghana Armed Forces

William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff, has emphasised the importance of restoring strict regimentation within the Ghana Armed Forces as a necessary step to improve operational efficiency and tackle emerging security threats.

Addressing participants at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on Monday, March 23, Lt Gen Agyapong pointed out that discipline, compliance with established standards, and respect for the chain of command remain the foundation of a professional military.

He warned that the evolving global and regional security environment presents increasingly complex challenges, such as hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and organised transnational crime. According to him, these developments require a military that is both adaptable and firmly grounded in discipline.

“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined and forward-looking to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” he stated.

The four-day retreat, which is scheduled to run from March 23 to 26, is being organised in phases at Burma Camp in Accra and Mampong-Akuapem. It is aimed at repositioning the Armed Forces through a renewed focus on regimentation, unity, and resilience.

Lt Gen Agyapong also highlighted the need for enhanced coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, explaining that joint planning and collaboration are crucial for successful operations.

He further called for stronger cooperation between the military and other state institutions to ensure a more integrated national security framework, while encouraging officers to adopt innovation and technology to effectively respond to future challenges.
