GES teacher recruitment portal attracts 40,000 applicants for 7,000 slots

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that more than 40,000 applicants submitted entries through the national teacher recruitment portal for just 7,000 available vacancies, highlighting both the high demand for teaching jobs and the existing gaps in Ghana’s education sector.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of e-Learning Africa, Mr. Iddrisu explained that although Ghana continues to face a significant teacher deficit, financial clearance was granted by the Ministry of Finance for only 7,000 new recruits due to budgetary constraints.

He assured that the recruitment process will be conducted in a transparent and merit-based manner, with the most qualified candidates selected from the large pool of applicants.

According to him, the recruitment portal was subsequently closed to prevent system overload and ensure the integrity of the application process, as the number of submissions far exceeded initial expectations.

“If resources were available, we should be recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that,” he said, emphasizing the scale of Ghana’s unmet staffing needs in the education sector.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that it received clearance from the Ministry of Finance to recruit only 7,000 teachers for the current cycle. The recruitment exercise was publicly advertised and opened to ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all eligible applicants.

“As the portal opened and the number reached 40,000, it was closed. The best 7,000 will be selected after careful assessment. We will do our best,” the Minister added.

Education analysts note that the overwhelming number of applicants reflects both high youth unemployment and persistent teacher shortages, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Many schools across the country continue to operate with inadequate staffing, affecting learning outcomes and increasing pressure on existing teachers.

The recruitment exercise is expected to focus on qualified candidates who meet professional teaching standards, with authorities stressing the importance of competence, fairness, and transparency in the final selection process.
