SHS placement results to be out Aug .31

The Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat is set to release the 2026 Senior High School (SHS) placement results on August 31, 2026, ahead of the commencement of the 2026/27 academic year.

The announcement follows the completion of the school-selection stage for more than 620,000 candidates who sat for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Hashmin Mohammed, disclosed the timeline in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, explaining that the placement results would be released after the completion of the ongoing pre-placement exercise.

The pre-placement exercise, being conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), gives candidates the opportunity to select their preferred senior high and technical schools after receiving their BECE results.

Mr Mohammed said the exercise was expected to end on August 10, although the deadline could be extended if necessary.

He said preliminary checks indicated that the process had proceeded smoothly, with many candidates completing their selections with assistance from parents and guardians.

So far, our checks show that many students, with the support of their parents and guardians, have completed their school selection. We have not received any major reports from the field, so the exercise is expected to end as scheduled,” he stated.

After the exercise is completed, WAEC will submit the final candidate data to the CSSPS Secretariat for processing.

The Secretariat will then use the data, together with candidates' examination performance and available school vacancies, to determine placements before releasing the results on August 31.

The Education Ministry has also expanded its placement resolution mechanism as part of efforts to reduce the difficulties parents and candidates have traditionally faced during the CSSPS process.

According to Mr Mohammed, placement resolution centres have now been established in all 16 regions of Ghana.

The decentralised system is intended to enable candidates and parents to resolve placement-related issues closer to their homes rather than travelling to Accra.

The Ministry also plans to establish call centres to provide information, respond to complaints and offer assistance to candidates and their families.

The measures are expected to reduce congestion and improve the efficiency of the placement resolution process once the results are released.

Mr Mohammed said the Ministry expects fewer placement-related complaints this year because candidates were allowed to select their preferred schools after the release of their BECE results.

The change follows recommendations from a committee established by the Minister of Education after consultations with parents, students, guardians and other stakeholders following challenges experienced during the previous placement exercise.

The new approach is intended to ensure that students make school choices based on their actual academic performance rather than selecting schools without knowing their BECE results.

The Education Ministry has urged candidates and their parents to accept the schools assigned to them by the CSSPS, stressing that placements are determined largely by candidates' performance and the availability of vacancies.

Mr Mohammed explained that selecting highly competitive schools without meeting the required academic standards could reduce a candidate's chances of securing a preferred placement.

The system can only place candidates into schools for which they qualify. If a candidate selects schools beyond his or her performance, the system will automatically consider other available options,” he said.

He encouraged parents to guide their children in making realistic school choices to minimise unsuccessful placements and unnecessary appeals.

Although more than 620,000 candidates participated in the 2026 BECE, the Education Ministry said the exact number of candidates who will participate in the placement exercise will only be known after WAEC submits the final pre-placement data.

Some candidates have had their BECE results withheld pending investigations, while others may not have obtained the grades required for placement into SHS or technical institutions.

Consequently, the number of candidates ultimately placed is expected to be lower than the total number who sat the examination.

The Ministry is also pursuing plans to expand capacity in Category A senior high schools to accommodate more qualified students.

Mr Mohammed said the initiative was still going through the necessary administrative and procurement processes.

He expressed optimism that work on the expansion programme could begin in 2027 once all statutory approvals and procurement requirements have been completed.

The expansion is expected to help address capacity constraints in some of Ghana's most competitive senior high schools.

With the CSSPS placement results scheduled for August 31, candidates and parents are expected to monitor official announcements from the Education Ministry and CSSPS Secretariat.

The Ministry has appealed to parents and guardians to support candidates throughout the placement process and to approach placement resolution centres or the planned call centres for assistance where necessary.

The release of the 2026 SHS placement results will mark another major stage in the transition of more than 620,000 BECE candidates into Ghana's second-cycle and technical education system ahead of the 2026/27 academic year.
