Fire guts Rubber Warehouse and Factory in Tema; firefighter sustain injuries

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that firefighters successfully extinguished a major warehouse fire that broke out in the Tema Industrial Area in the early hours of Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with one firefighter sustaining injuries during the emergency response.

The blaze, which engulfed a "Take Away" warehouse and a rubber warehouse and factory, prompted a large-scale firefighting operation involving personnel and equipment from multiple fire stations.

According to the GNFS, the fire started at approximately 12:40 a.m., triggering an immediate emergency response.

Four fire tenders from the following stations were dispatched to the scene:

• Tema Industrial Fire Station
• Devtraco Fire Station
• Motorway Fire Station
• Free Zones Fire Station

The coordinated response enabled firefighters to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby industrial facilities, helping to minimise what could have been a much larger disaster in one of Ghana's busiest industrial zones.

The Fire Service disclosed that several firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze.

One firefighter was injured after a section of a wall collapsed during firefighting operations.

According to the Service, the injured officer was quickly rescued and transported to Tema General Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

The GNFS did not immediately provide details on the extent of the injuries but indicated that the firefighter was receiving the necessary medical care.

The Fire Service confirmed that the warehouse fire has been completely extinguished.

However, firefighters remain at the scene carrying out salvage and overhaul operations to eliminate any remaining hotspots, secure the affected structures and prevent the fire from reigniting.

Salvage operations also involve recovering property where possible and assessing the extent of damage caused by the blaze.

The GNFS described the incident as a commercial fire within the Tema Industrial Area.

Investigators are expected to begin examining the scene to determine the cause of the outbreak and assess the full extent of damage to the warehouses and factory.

No civilian fatalities have been reported, and authorities are yet to estimate the financial cost of the incident.

The latest fire comes amid continued calls for improved fire safety measures within Ghana's industrial sector, particularly in warehouses and manufacturing facilities where combustible materials are often stored.
