2 dead, 6 injured in Suhum–Kumasi highway crash

Two people have lost their lives while six others sustained various degrees of injuries following a devastating multi-vehicle collision at Birimso Bridge on the N6 Highway along the Suhum–Kumasi road.

The accident, which occurred on Monday morning, involved five vehicles and resulted in a major traffic gridlock on one of Ghana's busiest highways, forcing police to implement emergency traffic diversions.

According to the Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, DOI Aaron Adu Ohemeng, emergency personnel responded swiftly to the scene to rescue victims and manage the aftermath of the crash.

The six injured survivors were rushed to Hawa Government Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment. Authorities say all six are currently in stable condition.

The severity of the collision caused a complete disruption to traffic along the affected stretch, prompting the Eastern South Regional Police Command to activate temporary diversion routes to ease congestion.

Under the emergency traffic management measures:

• Accra-bound motorists are being diverted through Kibi via Nsutam.
• Kumasi-bound motorists are being rerouted through Apedwa.

Police officers remain on the ground directing traffic while recovery teams work to remove the damaged vehicles and reopen the highway.

The Ghana Police Service has appealed to motorists to cooperate with officers managing traffic and to use only the designated diversion routes until normal traffic flow is restored.

Drivers have also been advised to exercise caution, obey traffic instructions and remain patient while emergency operations continue.

Authorities have commenced investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Although the circumstances surrounding Monday's collision are yet to be established, the Birimso Bridge section of the N6 Highway has witnessed several serious road accidents in recent years.

Road safety officials have frequently identified excessive speeding and dangerous overtaking as major contributing factors to crashes along the stretch, renewing calls for motorists to strictly adhere to speed limits and road safety regulations.
