Floodwaters recede in Hohoe as residents begin returning home – NADMO

The flood situation in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region is gradually easing, with floodwaters receding in several affected communities and displaced residents beginning to return to their homes.

Volta Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Pascal Agbagba, said the improving conditions have enabled some residents who had sought refuge with relatives or at designated safe havens to return home.

“As we speak now, the water has receded. People are getting back to their houses. The water is no longer in some of the houses,” Mr Agbagba said in an interview on Joy FM’s Middaynews.

More than 3,000 residents have been displaced following the overflow of the River Dayi, which affected more than 400 homes across several communities in the Hohoe Municipality.

The Zongo community is among the hardest-hit areas, with more than half of the settlement reportedly submerged during the flooding, forcing many residents to flee as water levels rose rapidly.

NADMO established temporary safe havens at the Adabraka and Nima Mosques, where more than 270 displaced persons are currently being accommodated.

Mr Agbagba said NADMO had provided immediate relief support, including about 100 mattresses, 50 bags of rice, cooking oil, mosquito nets, mosquito repellents, cups, plates and buckets.

He explained that the items formed part of an emergency response while the national NADMO office conducts a comprehensive assessment to determine the full scale of the disaster and additional support required.

According to him, approximately 5,000 people have so far been affected by the flooding, although a final needs assessment is expected to provide more accurate figures.

Mr Agbagba also noted that access to clean water remains a challenge in some communities, with the Ghana National Fire Service assisting in the supply of water to affected residents.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as recovery efforts progress, while residents are being advised to remain cautious and follow safety directives, particularly in low-lying areas that may remain vulnerable to further flooding.
