GMet warns of thunderstorms, strong winds across five regions

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a fresh weather alert warning of widespread thunderstorms and rainfall expected to affect several parts of the country, particularly coastal and southern regions.

In its latest advisory, the Agency reported the formation of localized rain-bearing clouds across the country, leading to overcast skies and ongoing thunderstorm activity accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall in some areas. These conditions are expected to persist over the coming hours, with intermittent periods of intense weather likely in affected zones.

Regions identified as most at risk include the Volta Region, Greater Accra Region, Eastern Region, Central Region, and Western Region. Residents in these areas may experience sudden downpours, lightning activity, and reduced visibility, which could disrupt transportation and outdoor activities.

The Agency further warned that the thunderstorms may be accompanied by strong and gusty winds capable of causing damage to property, including roofing, billboards, and weak structures. There is also a heightened risk of fallen trees and power outages in vulnerable communities, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Authorities are advising residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. This includes securing loose outdoor items, avoiding shelter under trees during storms, staying indoors where possible, and exercising caution while driving due to slippery roads and poor visibility. Fishermen and coastal communities have also been urged to closely monitor weather updates and avoid venturing into rough sea conditions during this period.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and staying informed through official channels as weather conditions continue to evolve.
