IGP promotes 25 police personnel over GH¢300k highway robbery arrests and cocaine bust

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has promoted 25 police personnel in recognition of their exceptional performance and contribution to the fight against crime across Ghana.

The promotions follow a series of successful police operations that resulted in the arrest of robbery suspects and the interception of suspected illicit drugs in the Bono East, Tema and Western Central Police Regions.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the officers were rewarded for their professionalism, courage and effectiveness during three major operations that yielded significant results for the service.

The first operation involved the arrest of six suspects linked to an alleged robbery on the Kintampo-Buipe Highway.

The suspects were arrested following a robbery on the Portor to Kawempe stretch of the highway on July 19, 2026, during which about GH¢300,000 was reportedly stolen from a victim.

The arrests were seen as an important breakthrough in efforts to tackle highway robbery and improve security along major transport corridors in the country.

The second operation resulted in the arrest of four suspected members of a violent robbery syndicate operating in the Tarkwa area.

The successful operation, according to the Police Service, demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and coordinated efforts by investigators and operational personnel.

The arrests are expected to assist the police in ongoing investigations into robbery-related activities in the Western Central Police Region.

The third operation involved the interception of 866 parcels of suspected cocaine at Tema Harbour.

The drug seizure represents one of the significant recent operations targeting illicit drug trafficking through Ghana's ports.

The operation also underscores the role of the police and other security agencies in preventing Ghana from being used as a transit point for international narcotics trafficking.

As part of the recognition, Chief Inspectors Bede Nwinbomeh and Joe Tetteh were granted automatic entry into the Police Academy.

Other personnel promoted include General Sergeants Elijah Ndaga Yinimi and Kaifan Sulemanna.

General Corporals Owusu Ansah Evans and Tansang Jonathan were also elevated, alongside General Lance Corporals Osei Christopher Bonny, Kyei Francis, Ofori Francis, Anim Dominic and Asante Isaac.

General Constables Adam Bakari Alhassan and Bakai Mark were among the other personnel promoted to their next ranks.

The promotions also covered members of the Ghana Police Service's detective corps.

They include Detective Chief Inspector Frank Dzah and Detective Inspectors Edem Ametowoga, Abroso and Vincent Dankwah.

Detective Sergeants Salifu Yakubu and Samuel Mordzifa were also promoted in recognition of their contribution to the successful operations.

The Police Service said six additional personnel were promoted to their next ranks for their roles in the operations.

The IGP and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) congratulated the promoted personnel for their dedication, courage and professionalism.

Mr Yohuno said the promotions demonstrated the Police Service's commitment to recognising officers who distinguish themselves in the performance of their duties.

He encouraged personnel across the service to maintain high standards of discipline and professionalism while working to protect lives and property.

The IGP assured officers that exceptional performance and commitment would continue to be recognised and rewarded.

The latest promotions form part of efforts to motivate police personnel and encourage intelligence-led operations in the fight against robbery, drug trafficking and other forms of organised crime.

The Ghana Police Service has in recent months continued to emphasise proactive policing, inter-regional collaboration and intelligence gathering as key tools for improving public safety and combating criminal networks.
