Mahama: Ghana–Lincoln University ties still strong despite degree snub

President John Dramani Mahama has affirmed that Lincoln University continues to hold a place of deep respect in his heart, despite the institution’s recent decision to withdraw an honorary doctorate that had been scheduled to be conferred on him.

The university, located in Pennsylvania, had planned to award the honorary degree to Mahama, but the plans were abruptly cancelled just days before the ceremony. Reports suggest that concerns within the university community over Mahama’s perceived stance on LGBTQ issues contributed to the decision. While the withdrawal sparked debate and media attention, Mahama responded with a measured statement reflecting both historical perspective and appreciation for the university’s legacy.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Philadelphia on Thursday, March 26, 2026, Mahama highlighted the long-standing historical ties between Ghana and Lincoln University. He recalled that the institution played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, nurturing his intellectual development and supporting his Pan-Africanist vision.

“Whatever disagreements have arisen, for me, Lincoln University holds a special place in my heart. It is where our first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was nurtured intellectually and shaped in his Pan-Africanist struggle. It remains hallowed ground for Ghanaians and an integral part of our history,” Mahama said.

He emphasised that, despite the controversy surrounding the honorary degree, the bond between Ghana and Lincoln University remains unbroken.

“We cannot separate Lincoln University from the story of Ghana, and we will continue to hold the institution in the highest esteem,” he added, underscoring that historical and educational connections transcend current disagreements.

Mahama’s remarks reflect a broader diplomatic and cultural perspective, highlighting the importance of recognising institutions that have contributed to Ghana’s intellectual and political heritage, even amid contemporary debates.
