US donates $4m in military equipment to Ghana Armed Forces

The United States has donated military equipment valued at $4 million to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), reinforcing the long-standing defence partnership between the two countries and enhancing Ghana's ability to respond to evolving security threats across the region.

The donation includes protective gear, radar systems, and training materials designed to improve the operational readiness of both the Ghana Army and the Ghana Navy. The equipment will strengthen surveillance, communication, maritime security, and overall operational effectiveness, particularly as Ghana and its neighbours continue to confront transnational security challenges.

In a statement announcing the donation, the United States reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana's defence and security institutions through sustained bilateral cooperation.

"The United States is proud to continue its longstanding security partnership with Ghana through the donation of $4 million in military equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces," the statement said.

According to the US government, the equipment package is intended to enhance the capabilities of Ghana's military by improving its ability to monitor, communicate, and respond effectively to security threats on land and at sea.

"The equipment—including protective gear, radar systems and training materials—will support the Ghana Army and Ghana Navy in strengthening surveillance, communication, and operational capabilities," the statement added.

The United States noted that the donation reflects the shared commitment of both countries to promoting peace and stability in West Africa, where concerns over terrorism, violent extremism, piracy, illicit trafficking, and other cross-border crimes continue to grow.

The support is expected to improve Ghana's capacity to secure its maritime domain, protect its territorial integrity, and contribute to regional security operations.

"This donation reflects our shared commitment to regional stability, maritime security, and addressing transnational threats," the statement emphasized.

The latest military assistance forms part of the broader security cooperation between Ghana and the United States, which has expanded over the years through joint military exercises, professional training programmes, intelligence sharing, and logistical support.

The partnership aims to strengthen the readiness and effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces while enhancing the country's role in maintaining peace and security within the West African sub-region.

With increasing security threats across the Sahel and Gulf of Guinea, the additional equipment is expected to further improve Ghana's surveillance capabilities, operational preparedness, and ability to respond swiftly to emerging challenges.
