NADMO Distributes relief items to Flood-Hit Communities in Western Region

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has distributed emergency relief items to flood-affected communities in the Western Region following last week's torrential rains that displaced hundreds of residents, destroyed farmlands and caused significant hardship across several districts.

The humanitarian intervention forms part of government's ongoing efforts to provide immediate assistance to families whose homes, livelihoods and properties were severely affected by the flooding.

The relief items were officially received by the Western Regional Director of NADMO, Daniel Darlington Atitso, on behalf of the beneficiary communities and the affected District Chief Executives.

Mr. Atitso expressed appreciation to NADMO Headquarters and the Government of Ghana for what he described as a swift response to the disaster.

"We are grateful to NADMO Headquarters and government for their quick intervention. These relief items will go a long way in supporting affected families as they begin rebuilding their lives," he said.

Samreboi was one of the communities hardest hit by the heavy rains, with floodwaters forcing hundreds of residents from their homes while vast farmlands were submerged, threatening the livelihoods of many farming households.

Several roads and properties were also affected as rivers overflowed their banks following days of continuous rainfall.

In addition to Samreboi, relief supplies were delivered to flood victims in Wasa Dunkwa, Asankragwa, and communities within the Nzema East District, where many households continue to recover from the disaster.

For communities in the Nzema East District, NADMO supplied:

  • 100 bags of rice
  • 30 canteens of cooking oil
  • 500 mosquito nets
  • 500 blankets
  • 8 bales of used clothing

Meanwhile, residents of Samreboi, Wasa Dunkwa and Asankragwa received:

  • 100 bags of rice
  • 30 canteens of cooking oil
  • 500 mosquito nets
  • 500 blankets
  • 12 bales of used clothing

The relief package is intended to provide immediate support to displaced families by addressing their basic food, shelter and health needs while longer-term recovery efforts continue.

Mr. Atitso indicated that NADMO officials are continuing to assess the full extent of the destruction caused by the floods to determine the additional support required by affected communities.

He noted that the organisation remains committed to working with local authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that victims receive the necessary assistance as recovery efforts progress.

With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting more rainfall in parts of the country, NADMO has urged residents living in flood-prone communities to remain vigilant and strictly observe safety precautions.

The organisation advised residents to avoid crossing flooded rivers and drains, relocate from high-risk areas where necessary, and promptly report emergencies to local disaster management officials.

Authorities have reiterated that preparedness and early response remain critical in minimising the impact of flooding as the rainy season continues across Ghana.
