No Free Tickets" – Why President Mahama is Cutting World Cup Travel and Who is Stepping Up to Save the Fans

If you were hoping for a government-sponsored trip to North America this summer to cheer on the Black Stars, we have some tough news. At a high-profile fundraising dinner at the Kempinski Hotel last night, President John Dramani Mahama made it clear: the state will not be paying for supporters to fly to the 2026 World Cup.

The "$2 Million for 200 Fans" Reality Check
The President didn't mince words about the cost. He pointed out that even a small group of just 200 fans would cost taxpayers nearly $2 million in flights and accommodation. "We must be responsible in how we use public resources," the President told the crowd of business leaders and sports officials. He explained that this "No Free Ride" policy follows the recommendations of the Dzamefe Commission, which was set up years ago specifically to stop the messy (and expensive) history of state-funded fan travel. Instead of flying fans, the President argued that this money is better spent on things like job creation and national infrastructure.

The Visa Warning: "Don’t Leave and Never Come Back"
There’s another catch for those planning to go on their own. The President issued a stern warning about visa overstays. It has taken years of diplomatic work to get Ghana back on the "good list" for US five-year visas, and the government is terrified that a wave of fans "disappearing" in America or Canada could lead to another travel ban for all Ghanaians. "I hope the World Cup does not see thousands of Ghanaians travel to America, refuse to return, and push us back onto the travel ban list," he added.

The $30 Million "Rescue Mission"
With the government stepping back, the private sector is stepping up—and in a big way. The goal is to raise $30 million to fund the Black Stars' campaign, and the pledges last night were staggering:

Engineers & Planners: Ibrahim Mahama’s mining firm stole the spotlight, pledging a massive $5 million as the headline sponsor.

Gold Fields: The mining giant followed up with a $2 million pledge.

Stonebwoy vs. Shatta Wale: Even our music icons got involved. Stonebwoy pledged a total of $101,000 ($81k in cash and $20k in music services) specifically to help fund fan travel. Shatta Wale wasn't far behind with a $100,000 pledge of his own.

What This Means for You
If you’re a member of a supporters' union, the message is clear: the era of government "per diems" is over. To get to Toronto for the opener against Panama on June 17, fans will need to rely on these private sponsorships or their own pockets.

With Group L being a "Group of Death" (England, Croatia, and Panama), the Black Stars need the support—but this time, the fans will have to get there on private fuel.
