One dead, six maimed as bloody land feud tears Krachi Nchumuru apart

A long-standing land dispute between the Kwadwoti and Macheri Konkonba communities has escalated into a deadly confrontation in the Krachi Nchumuru District, leaving one person dead and six others critically injured.

The violence, which erupted in the farming communities of Wurenja and Beposo, has triggered a humanitarian and security crisis. Several houses belonging to Nchumuru residents were set ablaze during the clashes, forcing many families to flee their homes in fear of further attacks.

Local sources indicate that the incident is the culmination of a protracted dispute over ownership and cultivation rights of fertile agricultural land shared between the two ethnic groups. Tensions had reportedly been building for months, with disagreements over boundaries and usage rights frequently arising during farming seasons.

What began as a verbal confrontation is said to have rapidly degenerated into a violent and coordinated clash. Eyewitness accounts suggest that both sides engaged in the exchange, catching unsuspecting residents in the crossfire and intensifying the scale of destruction.

The deceased, whose identity has not yet been officially released by authorities, is believed to have died from severe injuries sustained at the peak of the violence. Meanwhile, six other victims, some in critical condition with life-threatening wounds, are currently receiving emergency medical treatment at nearby health facilities.

In the aftermath, the affected communities remain engulfed in grief and fear. On Friday, thick plumes of smoke continued to rise from burnt structures in Beposo, a stark reminder of the destruction left behind. Displaced residents, including women and children, have sought refuge in neighbouring towns, uncertain about when it will be safe to return.

“The situation was uncontrollable,” a local source recounted. “Property has been lost, but the loss of life is what has broken the spirit of the people here.”

To prevent further escalation and possible retaliatory attacks, a significant deployment of security personnel has been made to the district. Armed officers are conducting continuous patrols in both Wurenja and Beposo, maintaining a strong presence aimed at restoring calm and deterring additional violence.

District authorities have confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the root causes of the conflict and identify those responsible for instigating the violence.

“We are working to bring those responsible to justice,” a security spokesperson stated. “Our immediate priority is restoring order and ensuring that no further blood is spilled.”

This tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent issue of land disputes and boundary conflicts in the Oti Region. Such disputes, often rooted in historical claims and unclear demarcations, continue to threaten peace and development in many rural communities.

Traditional leaders and civil society organisations are now intensifying calls for sustainable conflict resolution mechanisms, urging dialogue and mediation as alternatives to violence. They stress the need for clearly defined land ownership systems and stronger local governance structures to prevent future clashes.

Residents, still living under the shadow of fear, have appealed to the government to go beyond temporary security interventions. They are calling for long-term solutions, including structured negotiations, legal clarity on land ownership, and community-based peacebuilding initiatives to safeguard lives and ensure the stability of the region’s agricultural economy.
