A police officer has been captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), as well as a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer, during a confrontation over unpaid electricity bills.
The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, was shared on Facebook by GhOne TV and identifies the officer as Sergeant Matthew, who is reportedly stationed at Madina in Accra.
The incident is said to have occurred at the officer’s residence in Pantang within the Adentan Municipality. According to reports, ECG personnel had visited the premises to disconnect electricity supply due to an outstanding bill amounting to GH¢13,191.69.
Sources indicate that the property had been disconnected on more than six occasions in recent months over persistent non-payment. However, it is alleged that the officer repeatedly reconnected the power supply shortly after ECG officials left the premises, raising concerns about illegal reconnections and non-compliance with utility regulations.
Tensions reportedly escalated when ECG staff attempted to document the situation by recording a video as part of their operational procedures. This action is said to have triggered a confrontation, during which the officer allegedly assaulted some of the personnel present, including a CID officer who was reportedly at the scene.
The incident has left some ECG staff shaken, with concerns being raised about the safety of utility workers who carry out disconnection exercises, particularly in situations involving resistance from customers.
In addition to the alleged assault, the officer is also accused of seizing electricity cables belonging to the company during the altercation, further complicating the situation and raising potential legal implications.
In one of the widely circulated video clips, the officer is heard confronting the ECG staff and questioning their actions, asking: “Are you taking videos of me without my consent?”
The incident has since sparked public debate over law enforcement conduct, accountability, and the safety of public service workers, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the matter and appropriate disciplinary action if the allegations are confirmed.
