Retract ‘land guards’ report within 7 days or face legal action – GMA Deputy DG to Insight, 2 others
The Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Mubarick Masawudu, has given Insight newspaper and two other media houses seven days to retract a publication accusing him of using “land guards” in a private land dispute.
In a notice dated Tuesday, September 15, lawyers for Mr Masawudu demanded that the media houses retract the report, issue an apology and remove the publication from their digital and online platforms.
The notice, issued by law firm LIMO@LAW, concerns a report published on the front page of Insight on September 10. The lawyers contend that the allegations were not properly verified before publication and that their client was not given an opportunity to respond.
“It is a fundamental requirement of established journalistic standards that, before publication, you undertake the necessary enquiries, appropriately verify all allegations, cross-check and confirm facts,” the firm stated.
LIMO@LAW described the publication as a serious departure from accepted journalistic standards and said it could damage Mr Masawudu’s reputation.
The lawyers have given the media houses seven days from the date of the notice to meet their demands. They warned that failure to retract the report, apologise and remove it from their platforms would lead to legal action.
The notice sets out Mr Masawudu’s legal position. The allegations in the original report and the demands made by his lawyers have not been determined by a court.
