Two suspects arrested over deadly attack on Berekum Chelsea team bus

The Ghana Police Service has arrested two suspects, including the alleged gang leader, in connection with the robbery attack on a team bus carrying players of Berekum Chelsea, which resulted in the death of one footballer. The development marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

According to a police update, one of the suspects sustained gunshot injuries during an exchange of fire with police intelligence operatives and has since been transported to a hospital for treatment, while investigations continue. Authorities indicate that the suspect is under police guard as investigations proceed.

The arrests follow a deadly incident on Sunday, April 12, when six armed robbers ambushed the team’s bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyanihin District. The incident has sent shockwaves through the football community and raised concerns about security for teams traveling across the country.

The attackers, reportedly armed with pump-action guns, opened fire on the vehicle, forcing the driver to lose control as the bus veered off the road into nearby bushes. The violent nature of the attack has prompted calls for enhanced security measures for sports teams and public transport operators.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects involved in the attack. Investigators are reportedly pursuing multiple leads, including intelligence gathered from the scene and subsequent operations.

Authorities have assured the public that all perpetrators will be apprehended. The Ghana Police Service has also urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist in the investigation.

The tragic incident has reignited broader discussions about road safety, armed robbery, and the need for increased security presence on highways, particularly in areas identified as high-risk zones.
