Big step towards quality healthcare for every Ghanaian

Ghana is set to take a significant launch toward achieving universal access to quality healthcare as President John Dramani Mahama prepares to officially launch the Free Primary Health Care Programme on April 15.

The initiative represents a major policy commitment aimed at expanding healthcare access, particularly for the estimated 35% of Ghanaians who are currently not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The programme is expected to reduce financial barriers to essential health services and improve health outcomes across the country.

Ahead of the official launch, the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Good Friday conducted an inspection of a large consignment of medical equipment earmarked for nationwide distribution. The equipment, totaling 24,534 units, will begin reaching health facilities across the country starting next week.

This large-scale rollout is designed to strengthen the capacity of health facilities, particularly at the primary care level, and ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the Free Primary Health Care Programme.

The equipment package includes a wide range of essential medical tools and devices critical for diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. Among them are X-ray machines for imaging, vital signs monitors for tracking blood pressure and temperature, and glucometers for diabetes screening and management.

Additionally, maternal and neonatal care will receive a boost with the inclusion of baby incubators, radiant warmers, and oxygen concentrators to support newborn care. Health facilities will also be equipped with patient monitors, infusion devices for administering fluids and medications, laboratory analyzers for diagnostics, delivery beds for safe childbirth, hospital beds, and ultrasound machines to enhance imaging capabilities.

The distribution of these resources is expected to significantly improve service delivery, reduce patient wait times, and enhance the quality of care at health centers, clinics, and district hospitals nationwide.

Government officials describe the initiative as more than just the fulfillment of a campaign promise. It is being positioned as a transformative step toward building a resilient healthcare system that prioritizes accessibility, affordability, and quality for every Ghanaian.

As the country prepares for the official launch, the programme is already generating optimism among healthcare professionals and the public, with expectations that it will help bridge longstanding gaps in healthcare access and strengthen Ghana’s overall health system.
