Accra-Kumasi Expressway to be completed December 2028 – Ing. Ahlidza

The Managing Director of Accra-Kumasi Expressway Limited, Engineer Francis Ahlidza, has announced that the 175.6-kilometre Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to be completed by December 2028.

Engineer Ahlidza said the project has been structured around a two-year construction period, with physical works expected to begin in January 2027 after the completion of the procurement and contractor selection processes.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, September 15, he disclosed that the procurement process had already commenced, with prospective firms being invited to express interest in undertaking the major road project.

According to him, the contractor selection process will be conducted in two stages through international competitive procurement to ensure that suitably qualified companies are selected.

We are working with a two-year construction period starting at the end of this year. We have started the procurement process by requesting for firms to express interest which is an international competitive process but we will do that in two stages.”

He added: “We expect to close this at the end of the year so that the contractors can start working in January 2027 and complete by December 2028.”

If the procurement and construction schedules proceed as planned without significant delays, motorists could begin using the completed expressway by the end of 2028.

The announcement comes a day after the official right-of-way handing-over ceremony for the project was held on Monday, September 14.

The handover marked another step towards the physical implementation of the major road infrastructure project, which is expected to transform transportation between Accra and Kumasi.

The 175.6-kilometre expressway is expected to improve connectivity along one of Ghana’s busiest economic corridors while facilitating the movement of people and goods between the two cities and communities along the route.

The project is also expected to reduce travel times and improve road safety for motorists who regularly use the Accra-Kumasi corridor.

According to details provided on the project, the expressway will feature eight grade-separated interchanges designed to improve traffic flow and reduce conflicts at major junctions.

The project will also include 11 vehicle overpasses and 55 mainline bridges.

The development of the expressway forms part of efforts to improve Ghana’s road infrastructure and strengthen connectivity between the country’s major commercial and economic centres.

With procurement expected to be completed by the end of 2026 and construction scheduled to begin in January 2027, the project is targeting completion by December 2028.
