Comments made on behalf of the overlord of Bole, Bolewura Sarfo Kutuge Feso I, during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman’s “Thank You Tour” in the Savannah Region have triggered renewed political speculation about the future ambitions of veteran politician Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
The remarks were delivered at a stop in Bole during the tour, which forms part of Mr Asiedu Nketia’s nationwide engagement with party supporters, traditional leaders, and grassroots structures following the 2024 Ghanaian general election.
Speaking on behalf of the Bolewura, Tingawura Seidu Abudu Sampson—who also serves as a member of the Council of State—conveyed the chief’s appreciation for Mr Asiedu Nketia’s long-standing support for President John Dramani Mahama throughout his political career.
According to him, the Bolewura expressed gratitude for the NDC Chairman’s consistent loyalty and contribution to the party’s leadership journey, particularly his support for President Mahama “from the beginning up to this point.”
He also noted that the traditional ruler encouraged Mr Asiedu Nketia to continue his support for the President and the governing NDC administration as it consolidates its mandate.
However, the comments attracted wider attention after the Council of State member suggested that individuals who help others rise to high political office often receive similar blessings in return.
“Any son who supports a father to rise to the highest level will also receive prayers and blessings to rise to that same level, and possibly even surpass it in future,” he stated.
He further indicated that the Bolewura believed Mr Asiedu Nketia’s political sacrifices and service to the party and country would be rewarded, adding that traditional prayers had been offered on his behalf.
The remarks have since fueled discussion within political circles, particularly regarding possible leadership succession dynamics within the governing NDC.
Mr Asiedu Nketia, widely known as “General Mosquito,” is one of the most influential figures in the National Democratic Congress, having previously served as General Secretary before becoming National Chairman.
Although he has not publicly declared any intention to run for the presidency, political observers say his recent nationwide “Thank You Tour” has intensified speculation about his long-term political ambitions.
Critics and opponents have suggested that the tour may also be helping to strengthen his visibility and grassroots connections ahead of any potential future presidential contest, though these claims remain unverified and have not been addressed by Mr Asiedu Nketia.
The NDC Chairman’s current tour is officially aimed at expressing gratitude to supporters and engaging stakeholders after the party’s return to power following the 2024 elections.
During the Savannah Regional leg of the tour, he visited several communities including Salaga, Kpalbe, Buipe, Daboya, Damongo, Sawla, and Bole, where he met with chiefs, opinion leaders, and party executives.
