Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has suspended parliamentary sittings for three days to allow Ghana’s Parliament House to host an African parliamentary conference focused on LGBTQ-related issues and family values.
The conference has brought together parliamentary leaders and lawmakers from across the continent to discuss what organisers describe as growing external influences on African cultural and family values.
The event is being held in the main chamber of Parliament and is expected to run until the end of the week, resulting in the temporary suspension of parliamentary proceedings.
The gathering comes amid increasing legislative activity across several African countries, where governments and lawmakers are considering or implementing stricter laws relating to LGBTQ issues.
In Ghana, the development follows the recent passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, by Parliament on Friday, May 29, 2026. The legislation has generated significant debate both locally and internationally.
Despite the bill's passage, Speaker Bagbin has appealed to Parliament to reconsider aspects of the legislation, signaling the possibility of further deliberations before the measure progresses through the remaining stages of the legislative process.
The conference is expected to provide a platform for African lawmakers to exchange perspectives on policy approaches, cultural values, and the broader social implications of LGBTQ-related legislation across the continent.
Parliament is scheduled to resume its sittings following the conclusion of the conference.
