Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has disclosed that lawyers representing detained Member of Parliament Ohene Kwame Frimpong have successfully filed a bail application before a court in the Netherlands.
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews, the Majority Chief Whip said legal representatives for the MP submitted the application on Tuesday and are seeking an expedited hearing within the week.
According to Mr Dafeamekpor, the legal team is hopeful the court will hear the matter soon to determine whether the detained legislator can be granted temporary freedom while investigations continue.
“So, the lawyers have successfully filed for his bail today. And so we are praying that they will be given a hearing sometime within the week,” he stated.
Mr Frimpong is currently being held in custody in Amsterdam pending legal proceedings before a Dutch court.
Mr Dafeamekpor said both Parliament and the Ghanaian government have remained actively involved in supporting the MP since his arrest.
He disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague, has been coordinating efforts to assist the detained lawmaker.
“The government has also supported. The Foreign Minister has been able to coordinate the work of our ambassador to The Hague to support and offer him every assistance,” he explained.
According to him, parliamentary leadership has maintained regular communication with the MP’s family and legal representatives while closely monitoring developments surrounding the case.
The Majority Chief Whip also appealed to the Ghanaian public to remain calm and offer support to the detained MP and his family during the ongoing legal process.
“We think that he will prevail with the bail application,” he added.
Mr Dafeamekpor argued that granting bail would not interfere with ongoing investigations and insisted the legislator should be allowed temporary freedom.
“He should have his interim freedom to be able to do his work. He will not evaporate and go anywhere,” he stated.
Details surrounding the circumstances of Mr Frimpong’s arrest and detention have not yet been fully disclosed publicly, but the matter remains under consideration by Dutch authorities.
The case has attracted political attention in Ghana, with parliamentary leaders and government officials continuing diplomatic and legal engagement as proceedings unfold.
