The Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Charles Forson, has called on the Ghana Union of Traders Association and other trading groups to reconsider their ongoing strike action, urging them to prioritize national stability and the welfare of ordinary citizens.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme on Tuesday, April 14, Mr. Forson appealed for calm and dialogue, encouraging the association to temporarily suspend the industrial action while negotiations continue with the relevant authorities.
He stressed that while the right to strike is constitutionally protected and a legitimate form of industrial action, its broader impact on the economy and the livelihoods of ordinary Ghanaians cannot be ignored.
According to him, prolonged industrial action in key sectors such as trade and logistics has the potential to disrupt economic activity, increase the cost of goods and services, and worsen living conditions for vulnerable households.
Mr. Forson further emphasised that his position is guided by national interest rather than political affiliation, noting that as a public representative, he would not support actions that harm the country simply because he belongs to the opposition.
He therefore urged Ghana Union of Traders Association and other stakeholders to intensify engagement with the appropriate government institutions in order to arrive at a sustainable and mutually beneficial resolution to their concerns.
The MP also called for empathy in industrial relations, urging the association to “put a human face” on their demands and carefully consider the wider consequences of the strike on small businesses, commuters, and daily economic activity.
“Put a human face to the strike and end it because strikes in any form affect the economy and the standard of living of people,” he said, reiterating his appeal for restraint and constructive dialogue.
