Concerns Mount Over Alleged Politicization of Promotions in Ghana Police Service

Concerns are being raised over alleged unfair treatment and politicization within the promotion processes of the Ghana Police Service, with some stakeholders urging transparency and accountability in decisions affecting senior officers.

In a strongly worded appeal, a concerned voice has called on authorities to avoid misleading John Dramani Mahama regarding the true circumstances surrounding promotions within the service. The appeal highlights fears that certain officers are being misrepresented as politically affiliated, only for those narratives to later prove inaccurate or damaging.

According to the statement, some senior officers have reportedly faced stalled career progression after being labeled as aligned with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite maintaining professional neutrality. The situation, it is argued, has led to reputational harm and, in some cases, prolonged delays in promotions.

One example cited is that of Mr. Ayamga Y. Akologo, who is said to have remained at the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for four years under circumstances described as unjust. Despite reportedly accepting his position in good faith, believing the situation would improve, his appointment is alleged to have remained unresolved.

Similarly, Mr. Dsidi, currently serving as Western North Regional Commander, is said to have spent approximately eight years at the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), while several of his juniors have been promoted to Commissioner of Police (COP). The situation has been described as demoralizing and indicative of deeper systemic issues.

The statement further alleges that multiple senior officers have been unfairly tagged with political affiliations, which has negatively impacted their careers. It stresses that such practices undermine professionalism, weaken morale within the service, and risk eroding public trust in state institutions.

The appeal ultimately calls for a more transparent, merit-based promotion system that recognizes dedication, experience, and service rather than perceived political alignment. It emphasizes the need to safeguard the integrity of the Ghana Police Service and ensure that officers are treated fairly regardless of any alleged affiliations.
