Former Malawian President arrives in Ghana for Assemblies of God World Congress

Former President of Malawi, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has arrived in Accra as a Special Guest of Honour for the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, scheduled to take place from Wednesday, October 14, to Friday, October 16, 2026.

Dr Chakwera was accompanied by his wife, Mrs Monica Chakwera, ahead of the three-day international religious gathering, which has brought the global Assemblies of God community to Ghana.

The former Malawian leader was received at the airport by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, alongside senior representatives of Assemblies of God, Ghana, and the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey.

The delegation from Assemblies of God, Ghana, was led by its General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, and included other Executive Presbytery officers.

During the reception, Mr Ablakwa conveyed greetings from President John Dramani Mahama to Dr Chakwera and expressed the Ghanaian government’s delight at welcoming the former president to the country.

The Foreign Affairs Minister also commended the World Assemblies of God Fellowship for selecting Ghana, and Africa more broadly, to host the international congress.

He assured the church of the government’s support towards ensuring the successful organisation of the event.

Ghana’s hosting of the congress is expected to provide an opportunity for religious leaders and delegates from different countries to gather for fellowship, discussions and the exchange of ideas on issues affecting the global church.

Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, expressed appreciation to Dr Chakwera for accepting the invitation to participate in the congress.

The church leadership welcomed the former president’s presence, describing his attendance as an important part of the gathering.

The 10th Triennial Congress brings together members and leaders of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, an international Christian organisation with a presence across numerous countries.

Dr Chakwera expressed joy at the invitation and confidence in Ghana’s ability to host the global religious event successfully.

He also voiced optimism that the congress would have a significant spiritual impact, expressing hope that it would lead to what he described as a great revival.

His remarks underscored the spiritual expectations surrounding the gathering, which is scheduled to conclude on Friday, October 16.

The three-day congress places Ghana at the centre of an international gathering of Assemblies of God leaders and participants.

The event is expected to offer opportunities for worship, fellowship and engagement among delegates from different parts of the world.

The arrival of Dr Chakwera, alongside the participation of Ghanaian government officials and church leaders, highlights the international and diplomatic dimensions of the gathering.

With government support and the involvement of Assemblies of God leadership, organisers are looking forward to a successful congress in Accra.
