The National Housing Fund has announced that the government is expected to begin the construction of social housing projects in 2027 as part of efforts to expand access to affordable homes for Ghanaians.
Chief Executive Officer of the National Housing Fund, Prosper Hoetu, said preparations for the projects were ongoing, with work currently focused on designs, discussions with relevant stakeholders and the identification of suitable locations.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, October 12, Prosper Hoetu explained that the government was working to establish the necessary groundwork before determining the number of housing units to be constructed and other implementation details.
He said the ongoing preparatory work would help ensure that the proposed houses were affordable and suited to the needs of the intended beneficiaries, particularly households that struggle to access decent accommodation through the conventional housing market.
“Between now and the end of the year, we will be completing designs, discussions, locations and all that before we talk about numbers that we will be building but I can assure you that these houses will be very reasonable and affordable.
“We will work with relevant stakeholders and the local authorities to explore cheaper technology for building. That is another part of the conversation. As we speak now, one of the major policy initiatives that the government has taken is the piloting of the District Housing Programme, where we are using compressed earth bricks to build which is climate-resilient.”
