Mahama congratulates Luiz Lula da Silva on his re-election as President of Brazil

President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing optimism about strengthening bilateral relations between Ghana and Brazil and advancing the shared interests of countries in the Global South.

In a congratulatory message shared on Facebook, President Mahama highlighted the longstanding relationship between the two countries and reaffirmed his commitment to working with Lula to promote cooperation and development through the Accra Reset initiative.

“Congratulations to President Luiz Lula da Silva on your well-deserved re-election as President of Brazil,” Mr Mahama said.

“Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations.”

He added that both countries could work together to advance the interests of developing nations.

“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” the Ghanaian President stated.

President Mahama’s message places the Accra Reset initiative at the centre of his administration’s broader ambition to strengthen partnerships among countries of the Global South.

The initiative seeks to promote cooperation and collective action on issues affecting developing countries, including economic development, international representation and shared development priorities.

Ghana and Brazil have opportunities to deepen cooperation across areas such as trade, agriculture, education, technology and diplomatic engagement.

Stronger bilateral relations could also provide a platform for both countries to pursue common interests in international forums and support greater collaboration among developing economies.

President Mahama’s remarks signal his interest in maintaining close engagement with Brazil under Lula’s leadership.

Ghana and Brazil share historical ties and have maintained diplomatic relations over several decades. Both countries have also participated in international discussions concerning development, economic cooperation and the interests of developing nations.

Further strengthening these relations could open opportunities for increased trade, investment and technical cooperation, depending on the priorities agreed upon by both governments.

President Mahama’s congratulatory message underscores the importance his administration places on international partnerships and cooperation with countries that share common development objectives.

President Mahama’s message also highlights the diplomatic significance of Brazil’s leadership in discussions involving the Global South.

Brazil has played an active role in international forums addressing development, economic governance and the representation of emerging and developing economies.

By expressing his intention to work with Lula through the Accra Reset initiative, President Mahama has signalled Ghana’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Brazil on issues of mutual concern.

The two leaders’ engagement could provide opportunities to advance bilateral relations while promoting broader discussions about development and the priorities of countries in the Global South.
