Mahama gov’t has failed faster than expected – Annoh-Dompreh fires at NDC

Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has launched a strong criticism of the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, claiming the administration is rapidly losing public confidence due to economic hardship, persistent power outages, and what he described as weak governance.

Speaking during a workshop organised for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus at the Accra City Hotel on Monday, Mr Annoh-Dompreh argued that the government’s shortcomings had become visible only a short time after assuming office.

“I dare say that the NDC government has become unpopular even faster than we anticipated, and it did not take long for their shallowness to be exposed at every level,” he stated.

The Minority Chief Whip accused the government of failing to effectively manage the economy and address worsening electricity supply challenges, commonly referred to in Ghana as “dumsor.”

According to him, the return of power outages demonstrates that governance requires practical solutions rather than campaign promises.

“The return of economy-crippling dumsor shows that problems are not solved by promises, but by deliberate efforts to improve a system,” he said.

Mr Annoh-Dompreh further alleged that the NDC government hastily dismantled policies and systems introduced by the previous administration shortly after assuming power.

He also criticised the government’s handling of cocoa pricing, describing the recent cocoa producer-price reduction as one of the administration’s biggest failures.

“The recent cocoa producer-price reduction may well be the biggest deceit devised by the NDC government,” he remarked.

According to him, cocoa farmers remain highly vulnerable because many depend almost entirely on farming income for their livelihoods.

He stressed that the Minority Caucus had repeatedly called on government to introduce immediate interventions and relief measures to support cocoa farmers facing economic difficulties.

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP argued that the current economic situation is negatively affecting several groups across the country, including farmers, teachers, nurses, public sector workers, and traders.

“We cannot sit back while the cocoa farmer is wailing, the teachers and nurses are wailing, public servants are wailing and market women are wailing,” he declared.

“This is the reflection of the scam of the NDC government,” he added.

Despite the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, Mr Annoh-Dompreh insisted that the Minority Caucus has reorganised itself and remains prepared for future political contests.

According to him, the opposition caucus has emerged stronger, more strategic, and more focused ahead of the 2028 elections.

“We have bounced back stronger, more agile, well informed, and indeed ready to take on 2028 with tactics and strategies that will marvel our counterparts,” he stated.

He described the opposition bloc in Parliament as the “Mighty Minority” and praised members for maintaining pressure on the government through parliamentary debates, oversight responsibilities, and public advocacy.

According to Mr Annoh-Dompreh, the caucus has continued to effectively represent public concerns despite having fewer seats in Parliament.

“Though our numbers are few now, we have endeavoured to assert the great will of the people of Ghana in demanding proper governance from the Executive,” he said.

The Minority Chief Whip also accused the government of politicising discussions surrounding the Bank of Ghana’s 2025 financial statement in an attempt to divert attention from governance challenges.

He alleged that the administration was using the controversy to distract Ghanaians from what he described as “huge cracks in their sandcastle governance.”

Mr Annoh-Dompreh urged Minority MPs to intensify efforts to expose weaknesses within the government and hold the administration accountable to the Ghanaian public.

“Millions of Ghanaians deserve to know the true nature of their government in order to make the right decision of leadership,” he concluded.

The workshop brought together Minority Members of Parliament, party executives, and invited resource persons ahead of the resumption of parliamentary proceedings this week.
