Mahama refers IEAG petition on Ship Owners’ representation on boards to Transport Ministry
President John Dramani Mahama has referred a petition from the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) to the Ministry of Transport for consideration.
The petition calls for a review of the Ship Owners and Agents Association of Ghana’s (SOAAG) representation on the boards of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA).
The IEAG has raised concerns about SOAAG’s continued membership of the two boards, citing what it describes as non-compliance with government directives and accountability issues within the maritime sector.
The association has also questioned the continued imposition of the Container Administrative Charge on importers.
In a letter dated September 16, 2026, the Presidency acknowledged receipt of the petition and said it had been forwarded to the Transport Ministry for the necessary action.
“I am directed to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated 15th September, 2026, and to inform you that the petition has been duly noted and referred to the Ministry of Transport for necessary action,” the letter stated.
The referral means the petition has been sent to the Ministry for consideration; the letter does not indicate whether the requests made by the IEAG have been accepted or what action, if any, will follow.
