NDC renames National Headquarters after J. J Rawlings

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially renamed its national headquarters in honour of its founder and former President, Jerry John Rawlings, while also unveiling a bust of the late statesman as part of activities marking what would have been his 79th birthday.

The ceremony, held on Monday, June 22, 2026, attracted senior party executives, government officials, party supporters, and admirers who gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Ghana’s most influential political figures.

The event formed part of a broader commemoration under the theme “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” which seeks to reflect on Rawlings’ contributions to Ghana’s democratic development, governance reforms, and political transformation.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the official renaming of the NDC’s national headquarters after Rawlings, a move party leaders described as a fitting tribute to the man who founded the party and played a pivotal role in shaping Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

The decision is intended to preserve his memory within the party’s history and serve as a reminder of the principles of accountability, social justice, and patriotism that he consistently championed throughout his public life.

Party officials noted that the renaming symbolizes the NDC’s commitment to keeping Rawlings’ vision alive while inspiring future generations of party members and national leaders.

Following the renaming ceremony, party leaders unveiled a bust of the late former President at the headquarters.

The monument is expected to stand as a permanent symbol of Rawlings’ enduring influence on Ghanaian politics and his role in the establishment of the NDC.

Supporters at the event described the unveiling as a significant moment in the party’s history, reflecting the deep respect and admiration many members continue to hold for the late leader.

Rawlings remains one of the most consequential figures in Ghana’s contemporary political history. He first came to power as a military leader before overseeing Ghana’s transition to constitutional democracy and becoming the country’s first President under the Fourth Republic.

As President from 1993 to 2001, Rawlings played a central role in strengthening democratic governance, promoting political stability, and laying the foundation for Ghana’s modern democratic system.

His leadership continues to shape political discourse in Ghana, with both supporters and critics acknowledging his lasting impact on the nation's development.

President John Dramani Mahama was expected to join the commemorative event and deliver a special address highlighting Rawlings’ contributions to the country and the NDC.

Other senior party figures were also expected to pay tribute to the former President, reflecting on his role in building the party into one of Ghana’s leading political movements.

Speakers at the event emphasized that Rawlings’ legacy extends beyond politics, touching on governance, anti-corruption advocacy, social justice, and national unity.

Party leaders said the renaming of the headquarters and the unveiling of the bust represent more than symbolic gestures. They described the initiatives as a reaffirmation of the values that Rawlings stood for and a commitment to advancing those principles in contemporary governance.

The ceremony concluded with calls for party members to draw inspiration from Rawlings’ leadership style and dedication to public service as the NDC prepares for future political challenges and national development efforts.
