Ghana's governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has signed a political cooperation agreement with United Russia, the ruling party of the Russian Federation, in a move aimed at strengthening inter-party relations, promoting political dialogue and expanding cooperation between Russia and African political parties.
The agreement was signed in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on June 25, 2026, during a working meeting of the Standing Committee of the For the Freedom of Nations! Movement, an international political platform that brings together political parties and organisations from different regions of the world.
The development marks another milestone in the growing political engagement between Ghana and Russia and reflects both parties' commitment to enhancing cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic and parliamentary relations.
The cooperation agreement followed bilateral discussions between Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, and Andrei Klimov, a member of the Supreme Council Bureau of United Russia.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, both leaders reviewed the current state of relations between Ghana and Russia and acknowledged the increasing collaboration between the two countries, particularly through parliamentary exchanges and political engagement.
The parties agreed that stronger institutional ties between their political organisations would contribute to broader cooperation in areas of shared interest.
During the discussions, Dr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia recognised Russia's historical contribution, as the successor state to the former Soviet Union, in supporting anti-colonial movements and national liberation struggles across parts of Africa.
He reaffirmed the NDC's commitment to the objectives and guiding principles of the For the Freedom of Nations! Movement, stressing the importance of dialogue, cooperation and solidarity among political parties pursuing shared developmental goals.
The NDC Chairman also expressed optimism that closer engagement would create new opportunities for political cooperation and exchanges between Ghana and Russia.
A key outcome of the agreement was the commitment by both parties to encourage stronger collaboration among political parties across the African continent, with particular attention to West Africa.
The two sides agreed to facilitate greater interaction, exchange of experiences and cooperation on political organisation, governance and development issues.
They also emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships that support peace, stability and sustainable development across Africa.
Officials from both parties highlighted the significance of the upcoming third Russia–Africa Summit, describing it as an important platform for expanding political, economic and diplomatic cooperation between Russia and African nations.
They expressed hope that stronger engagement between political parties would complement government-to-government relations and contribute to deeper collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, education, technology and international diplomacy.
The cooperation agreement represents a further step in the evolving relationship between the NDC and United Russia, building on the broader diplomatic, parliamentary and political engagement between Ghana and the Russian Federation.
Political observers say such agreements provide opportunities for dialogue, exchange of governance experiences and stronger international partnerships between political organisations.
The signing also reflects ongoing efforts by the NDC to strengthen international political relationships and expand engagement with parties and institutions across different regions of the world.
