NPA CEO Vows to Intensify Fight Against Illegal Fuel Smuggling Along Ghana’s Coast

Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, Godwin Kudzo Tameklo, has reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to cracking down on illegal fuel smuggling and illicit petroleum trading activities along Ghana’s coastal areas.

His comments follow a visit to the Eastern Naval Command in Tema on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after the arrest and destruction of eight dinghies allegedly used for illegal fuel operations.

The exercise forms part of ongoing collaboration between the NPA, the Ghana Navy, and other maritime security agencies to combat fuel smuggling and protect the integrity of Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.

Speaking during the visit, Mr. Tameklo praised the Eastern Naval Command, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, and other maritime law enforcement agencies for their efforts in tackling smuggling and illegal fuel activities.

“The National Petroleum Authority commends the Eastern Naval Command for their relentless efforts in combating smuggling and other illicit fuel activities, which have led to the arrest and subsequent destruction of these eight dinghies today,” he stated.

According to him, the destruction of the vessels is intended to send a strong warning to individuals and groups engaged in illegal fuel transportation and trading along Ghana’s maritime corridors.

Mr. Tameklo noted that the latest operation follows a similar exercise carried out by the Western Naval Command on May 15, 2026.

“We believe that the destruction of the dinghies, as carried out at the Western Naval Command on May 15, 2026, and the exercise today, will serve as a strong deterrent to illegal fuel operators who exploit our maritime space for illicit activities,” he said.

Authorities say illegal fuel smuggling continues to pose a major threat to the petroleum sector, resulting in revenue losses, regulatory breaches, and security concerns within Ghana’s coastal communities.

The NPA CEO assured that the Authority would continue strengthening collaboration with security agencies through joint operations, intelligence sharing, and stakeholder coordination.

He stressed that the Authority remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry from illegal activities that undermine national revenue mobilisation and fuel market stability.

Industry observers say enhanced maritime surveillance and stronger enforcement measures are becoming increasingly important as authorities intensify efforts to curb cross-border fuel smuggling and illegal petroleum trade.

The latest operations form part of broader national efforts to strengthen oversight within Ghana’s petroleum sector and improve compliance with fuel transportation and distribution regulations.

Security agencies have in recent months intensified monitoring activities across coastal zones and key petroleum distribution routes as part of the nationwide anti-smuggling campaign.

Officials believe continued collaboration between regulatory bodies and security institutions will help reduce illicit fuel activities and strengthen confidence within Ghana’s energy sector.
