NPP accuses Mahama government of allowing Ghana to become drug transit hub

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has alleged that Ghana has become a major transit point for illicit drugs under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Mr Boakye alleged that the development was being facilitated by officials working at Ghana’s ports and airports.

“Our information is that our country has become a major transit point for illicit drugs, for narcotics. And it's not by accident, but because of the complicity of officials at our port and our airports,” he said.

Mr Boakye further alleged that drug traffickers have established bases and clandestine laboratories in Ghana to process narcotics before they are exported to other countries.

“The intelligence we have picked is that these drug lords, these traffickers, they have established bases, laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama,” he alleged.

He also accused some government officials of allegedly assisting traffickers in moving narcotics out of the country.

Mr Boakye linked his claims to drug seizures involving consignments that he said had been traced to Ghana in countries including Australia, France and South Africa.

“That is the reason why volumes of drugs traced to Ghana keep surfacing in the holds of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk, and Johannesburg,” he said.

He maintained that the alleged processing and trafficking activities were taking place within Ghana and accused officials of facilitating the movement of the narcotics.

“It is happening here in our home, under the government's watch,” he added.

The latest allegations add to recent concerns raised by the NPP about Ghana’s role in international narcotics trafficking.

In August, Mr Boakye also raised separate concerns about Ghana’s handling of illicit gold and illegal mining, alleging weaknesses in the gold supply chain. Those claims were also presented by the NPP as concerns requiring government accountability.

However, the specific allegations concerning clandestine drug laboratories, the alleged involvement of government officials and Ghana’s role as a major narcotics transit point would require verification by the relevant law-enforcement and security authorities.

Mr Boakye’s comments come amid continued scrutiny of Ghana’s efforts to prevent the country from being used as a transit route for international drug trafficking.
