The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has announced the commencement of payments of outstanding arrears owed to workers in the education and health sectors following months of delays.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Department said the arrears, which date back to August 2024, will be paid in four equal instalments between May and August 2026.
According to the CAGD, the phased payment arrangement is intended to ensure the full settlement of all outstanding arrears without further delays.
The first instalment is expected to be completed by Friday, May 29, 2026.
Subsequent payments are scheduled for June, July, and August 2026 until all arrears are fully cleared.
“The Department further states that the remaining tranches will be paid in accordance with the approved schedule stated above,” the statement signed by Head of Public Relations, Cephas N. Dosoo, stated.
The announcement is expected to bring relief to affected teachers, nurses, and other public sector workers who have been awaiting payment of their entitlements for several months.
The delays in arrears payments had generated concerns among workers within the education and health sectors, with many calling for urgent government intervention.
Although the Department did not disclose the total amount involved or the exact number of beneficiaries, officials say the phased approach will allow for a smooth and sustainable settlement process.
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department plays a key role in managing government payroll systems and public sector salary payments across Ghana.
The latest move forms part of broader efforts by government to address outstanding compensation obligations and improve confidence among public sector workers.
“CAGD thanks all affected beneficiaries for their patience and forbearance,” the statement added.
