President Mahama cuts sod for new Airport concourse project to link terminal 2 and 3

John Dramani Mahama has officially launched the construction of an interconnecting concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport, signaling the beginning of a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing congestion and strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, Mahama stressed that the project goes beyond symbolism, describing it as a strategic investment in the country’s transport infrastructure. According to him, the new concourse will play a vital role in improving operational efficiency, enhancing passenger comfort, and supporting Ghana’s broader economic transformation agenda. He noted that modern aviation infrastructure is essential for attracting international airlines, boosting tourism, and facilitating trade.

The president highlighted a sharp rise in passenger traffic in recent years, with numbers growing from 1.8 million in 2022 to approximately 2.5 million in 2025. He attributed this increase to Ghana’s growing global appeal, improved air connectivity, and its reputation as a stable destination for business and tourism in the region. However, he acknowledged that the surge in passenger numbers has placed significant strain on existing airport facilities, particularly during peak travel periods when congestion disrupts passenger flow, delays boarding processes, and affects overall service delivery.

Mahama emphasized the urgency of addressing these operational challenges, warning that failure to expand infrastructure could undermine the gains made in the aviation sector. He added that the new concourse is designed to provide a seamless connection between Terminals 2 and 3, reducing transfer times and improving coordination between domestic and international flights.

The planned facility will feature state-of-the-art boarding bridges, larger and more comfortable waiting areas, dedicated VIP lounges, and expanded retail and commercial spaces. In addition, the project includes upgraded service infrastructure such as improved baggage handling systems, enhanced security checkpoints, and modern passenger information systems. These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the overall travel experience while increasing the airport’s capacity to handle future growth.

Once completed, the interconnecting concourse is expected to position Kotoka International Airport as a more competitive transit hub in West Africa, capable of accommodating rising passenger volumes and meeting international aviation standards. The project also aligns with Ghana’s long-term vision of becoming a key gateway for air travel, logistics, and commerce across the African continent.
