Roads Minister inspects Accra projects, directs integration of electronic toll systems

Roads Minister Directs Contractors to Align Projects with Planned Electronic Tolling System

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has directed contractors working on new road construction projects to collaborate closely with the Ghana Highways Authority to ensure that all road designs are compatible with the country’s planned electronic tolling system.

The directive was issued during an on-site inspection of ongoing projects in Accra, including expansion works on the Accra–Tema Motorway, a key transport corridor linking the capital to the port city of Tema.

According to the minister, integrating tolling technology into road designs at an early stage will help avoid costly modifications in the future and ensure a smooth rollout of the electronic toll system once it is introduced. He explained that a third-party firm will be responsible for designing the tolling infrastructure, making it essential for contractors to align their engineering plans with the system from the outset.

Mr Agbodza emphasized that proper coordination between contractors and relevant agencies is critical to preventing operational disruptions when the tolling system becomes fully functional.

He also addressed concerns about delays in project execution, noting that the relocation of essential utility services—particularly electricity and water lines—has been a major challenge affecting many road projects. However, he assured stakeholders that all outstanding payments related to such works have now been settled.

The minister further revealed that there are no pending payment certificates on the Accra–Tema Motorway expansion project. He urged contractors and consultants to re-engage subcontractors and intensify work to accelerate progress.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Mr Agbodza assured project teams of continued support to ensure timely completion. He also commended contractors for the progress made so far and encouraged them to maintain momentum.

Meanwhile, the project manager for the motorway expansion, Engineer Ben Sackey, reaffirmed the contractor’s commitment to delivering the project within the agreed deadline of August 2, 2027.

Officials believe that the settlement of outstanding debts and improved coordination with key utility providers, including the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Limited, will help speed up construction and ensure the project is completed on schedule.
