2026 World Cup: England vs Ghana preview

The spotlight will be firmly on Ghana national football team and England national football team on Tuesday as the two nations clash in one of the most anticipated fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.

Both sides head into the Group L encounter on the back of opening victories. England produced an impressive attacking display to defeat Croatia 4-2, while Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Caleb Yirenkyi.

For the Black Stars, the match presents an opportunity to make a major statement on football’s biggest stage. England, meanwhile, know that another victory could virtually secure qualification to the knockout rounds and strengthen their grip on top spot in the group.

Ghana have received a significant boost ahead of the contest with the return of Thomas Partey. The experienced midfielder missed the victory over Panama due to visa and immigration complications but has now joined the squad and declared himself ready for action.

His return is expected to strengthen Ghana’s midfield as the Black Stars prepare to face one of the tournament favourites.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has also recovered from a groin injury sustained in the opening match and could feature against England.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz believes his side has the quality and motivation to challenge England despite the difference in FIFA rankings.

“We know how England play. They have excellent players and intensity, but we know how we can control this. They have three lions, but we have 33 million lions,” he said.

The Portuguese tactician added that matches against football powerhouses require little motivation.

“When you're about to play against England, France or Germany, you don't need to say anything to the players. Everybody wants to perform well.”

England manager Thomas Tuchel was pleased with his team’s attacking performance against Croatia but acknowledged there are areas that require improvement.

“I predict a little bit of a different game than Croatia because of the different approach, but who knows? We have to be ready to find answers to any question that is asked tomorrow,” Tuchel said.

England are expected to maintain much of the side that defeated Croatia, although Bukayo Saka could begin on the bench despite recovering from an Achilles issue.

England (4-2-3-1):
Pickford; James, Konsa, Stones, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.

Ghana (4-2-3-1):
Asare; Mensah, Opoku, Adjetey, Senaya; Partey, Yirenkyi; Semenyo, Prince Adu Kwabena, Fatawu Issahaku; Thomas-Asante.

This will be the first competitive meeting between Ghana and England. Their only previous encounter ended in a 1-1 draw at Wembley in 2011, with Asamoah Gyan scoring for Ghana after England had taken the lead.

England have never lost to an African nation at the FIFA World Cup, recording five wins and three draws in eight matches against teams from the continent.

Despite England’s superior ranking and pedigree, Ghana will take confidence from their resilient victory over Panama and the return of key players ahead of the crucial fixture.
