Barcelona hit Real Madrid for six in last-eight tie

FC Barcelona Femení took firm control of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie with a commanding first-leg victory over rivals Real Madrid Femenino in Madrid, delivering a dominant attacking performance that underlined their status as one of Europe’s elite sides.

The three-time European champions wasted no time asserting themselves, opening the scoring just six minutes into the match. Patri Guijarro initiated the move with a precise pass over the Real Madrid defence, which was cleverly received by Alexia Putellas. Demonstrating composure and unselfish play, Putellas squared the ball for Ewa Pajor, who calmly rounded off a well-worked team goal.

Barcelona doubled their lead just seven minutes later, continuing to exploit gaps in the Real Madrid defence. Vicky López delivered a dangerous cross into the box, where Esmee Brugts directed a header on goal. Goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez managed to get a hand to the effort, but could only divert the ball into her own net.

Despite Barcelona’s early dominance, Real Madrid responded in the 30th minute through Linda Caicedo. Showing pace and composure, she dribbled past Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll and slotted home to give the hosts a lifeline.

However, any hopes of a sustained comeback were quickly extinguished. Just two minutes later, Barcelona restored their two-goal cushion when Irene Paredes rose highest to power in a header from a corner delivered by Claudia Pina.

Barcelona’s attacking quality continued to shine in the second half. Pajor added her second goal of the night in the 57th minute, finishing first-time from an assist by Clara Serrajordi. Seven minutes later, López capped off another flowing move by sliding in Barcelona’s fifth goal, effectively putting the tie beyond doubt.

Caicedo once again provided a bright moment for Real Madrid, scoring her second goal in the 66th minute with a superb individual effort, rifling the ball into the top corner. Nevertheless, Barcelona had the final say, adding a sixth goal in the 89th minute when Putellas converted from the penalty spot after Caroline Graham Hansen was fouled inside the box.

The emphatic result puts Barcelona in a commanding position ahead of the second leg at Spotify Camp Nou on 2 April, where they are widely expected to secure progression to the semi-finals. There, they could face either Manchester United Women or Bayern Munich Women.

Barcelona are aiming to reach the semi-finals for an eighth consecutive season and continue their remarkable dominance in European football. Having lifted the trophy in 2021, 2023, and 2024, they remain one of the competition’s most formidable sides, despite falling short in last season’s final against Arsenal Women.

Domestically, Barcelona are equally dominant. They are closing in on a seventh consecutive league title in Spain, sitting 10 points clear of Real Madrid after winning 22 of their 23 matches. Their remarkable attacking record—scoring 103 goals while conceding just six—highlights their superiority. The two rivals are set to meet again in a league clash in Madrid on Sunday, offering Real Madrid a chance to respond before the decisive European second leg.
