The Black Stars’ final preparations for tonight’s international friendly against Austria have been rocked by a daring robbery at the team’s hotel in Vienna.
Valuables worth tens of thousands of dollars, including luxury watches and a significant amount of cash, were reportedly stolen from the rooms of players and management.
What was meant to be a focused training camp ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has instead turned into a police investigation, casting a shadow over the team just hours before kickoff at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.
The Missing Valuables According to team officials and sources in Vienna, the thefts occurred in two waves: The Watches: Two players discovered that their Rolex watches, valued at approximately $20,000 each, had been taken from their rooms following the team’s third training session on Wednesday. The Cash: The situation worsened the following day when a member of the technical staff realized that $2,250 in cash was missing from their belongings.
The "Broken CCTV" Mystery In a frustrating twist for the Ghana Football Association (GFA), hotel management has reportedly told investigators that the surveillance cameras (CCTV) were not functioning at the time of the incident.
This claim has sparked outrage among Ghanaian officials and fans. Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirmed that Austrian police are now investigating exactly when the cameras stopped working and if there was any internal involvement.
"The initial report we have is that the CCTV was not functioning, and the police are checking who was responsible for the hotel's surveillance system at that time," Adams stated.
No Forced Entry Adding to the mystery, hotel management has pushed back against some of the claims, stating there was no evidence of a forced entry or a typical "break-in." This has led to intense scrutiny over hotel security protocols and whether the thief had access to master keys.
The Show Must Go On Despite being visibly unsettled by the breach of security, Head Coach Otto Addo and the squad have decided to proceed with the match. The Black Stars management committee released a statement assuring fans that the players remain "calm and focused" on the task at hand. The match against Austria (set for 17:00 GMT) is a critical test for Ghana as they fine-tune their tactics for a World Cup group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama. Following tonight’s game, the team is scheduled to travel to Stuttgart to face Germany on Monday, March 30.
