Ghana’s World Cup dream ends as Arias fires Colombia into last 16

Ghana's dream of progressing to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Friday night after the Black Stars suffered a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their Round of 32 encounter.

An early strike from Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias proved decisive as the South Americans held on to book their place in the last 16, where they will face Switzerland, while Ghana exited the tournament after a spirited but ultimately frustrating performance.

Despite showing determination throughout the contest, the Black Stars were unable to find the breakthrough against a disciplined Colombian side that defended resolutely and capitalised on one of their few clear opportunities.

Ghana began the match positively and nearly took the lead within the opening minutes.

Captain Thomas Partey tested Colombia with a powerful long-range effort that narrowly missed the target, providing an early indication of the Black Stars' attacking intent.

However, the momentum soon shifted as both teams were forced into early injury substitutions.

Colombia lost striker Jhon Córdoba, who was forced off with a groin injury and replaced by Luis Suárez.

Moments later, Ghana suffered a setback of its own when right-back Marvin Senaya, who initially attempted to play through a hamstring injury, was unable to continue and was replaced by Alidu Seidu before the 15-minute mark.

The decisive moment arrived in the 14th minute.

Only moments after coming off the bench, Luis Suárez delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area where Jhon Arias escaped his marker and calmly side-footed the ball beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi at the back post.

The goal gave Colombia a crucial early advantage and allowed the South Americans to settle into their rhythm, enjoying greater possession and dictating the tempo for much of the first half.

Colombia continued to threaten after taking the lead.

Luis Díaz came close to extending the advantage after breaking into a dangerous position but fired wide when well placed.

Ghana remained in the contest largely thanks to goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi, who produced several outstanding saves to deny Colombia.

Just before half-time, the Black Stars goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to push away a powerful header from Johan Mojica, preserving Ghana's hopes heading into the break.

The Black Stars emerged with renewed determination after the interval and enjoyed their best attacking spell of the match.

Forward Antoine Semenyo produced Ghana's clearest opportunity when he burst into the penalty area before sending a dangerous low cross across the face of goal.

Unfortunately for Ghana, no teammate arrived in time to convert the inviting delivery.

Colombia remained dangerous on the counterattack, with Luis Díaz twice threatening to double the lead.

One effort was ruled out for offside, while another forced yet another excellent save from Lawrence Ati Zigi, who continued to keep Ghana within touching distance.

Seeking a route back into the contest, head coach Carlos Queiroz introduced fresh legs during the second half.

Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu replaced Kwasi Sibo and Inaki Williams before Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu were also introduced as Ghana increased its attacking intensity.

Despite the substitutions, the Black Stars found it difficult to penetrate Colombia's organised defensive structure.

The South Americans remained dangerous from set pieces and counterattacks, with Davinson Sánchez heading straight at Ati Zigi before substitute Juan Quintero narrowly missed the target with a long-range effort.

Ghana continued pressing for a late equaliser in the closing stages, but Colombia defended resolutely and restricted the Black Stars to very few clear scoring opportunities.

Goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was rarely called into decisive action as Colombia maintained their defensive discipline to protect their slender advantage.

When the final whistle sounded, Jhon Arias' first-half goal was enough to secure Colombia's place in the Round of 16.

For Ghana, the defeat brings an end to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after a tournament that showed moments of promise but ultimately ended in disappointment.

While the Black Stars exit earlier than they had hoped, the performances of players such as Lawrence Ati Zigi, Thomas Partey and Antoine Semenyo offered positives that the team can build on ahead of future international competitions.
