‘‘We can handle difficult situations’’ – defiant Otto Addo assures ahead of Germany test

Otto Addo, head coach of the Ghana national football team, has expressed confidence ahead of Monday’s international friendly against Germany national football team, insisting his side remains focused despite their heavy defeat to Austria national football team in Vienna.

Ghana endured a difficult outing on Friday, suffering a 5-1 loss to Austria in a pre-World Cup friendly. The result marked one of the team’s heaviest defeats in recent years and the first time the Black Stars had conceded five goals in a single match since their 5-0 loss to Saudi Arabia national football team in 2007.

Reflecting on the performance, Otto Addo admitted the result was a major setback in Ghana’s preparations but emphasized that the team has used the time since the match to carefully review what went wrong. He noted that while the Black Stars entered the game with optimism, defensive lapses and what he described as “unnecessary goals” in the first half disrupted their structure and confidence, ultimately leading to a collapse in performance.

“We have had a lot to analyze since Saturday’s defeat, which was a big, big blow for us in our preparation,” he said. “We were actually optimistic to at least have a good game. But after the first half and let’s say two unnecessary goals, we fell apart.”

Despite the disappointment, the Ghana coach believes the experience has provided valuable lessons for the team as they prepare to face a much stronger opponent in Germany. He indicated that tactical adjustments, mental resilience, and improved organization will be key areas of focus going into the next match.

Looking ahead to the clash in Stuttgart, Addo acknowledged the quality of the German side but maintained that Ghana is capable of delivering a competitive performance. He stressed that the team remains optimistic and determined to respond positively after the Austria defeat.

“So we had a lot of things to talk through and analyze,” he added. “Surely even though we will have very strong opponents, we are very, very optimistic that we can handle the situation.”

The upcoming match against Germany presents an opportunity for the Black Stars to test their progress, rebuild confidence, and fine-tune their preparations as they continue their build-up toward future international competitions.
