Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautions against travelling to South Africa over heightened anti-African sentiment

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an urgent travel advisory to Ghanaians planning to visit South Africa, urging them to exercise heightened caution due to planned nationwide demonstrations, rising anti-African sentiment, and the potential for violence against foreign nationals.

The advisory, issued on June 29, 2026, comes ahead of demonstrations scheduled for Monday, June 30, which authorities fear could heighten tensions in several parts of South Africa. The Ministry warned that reports of an "unofficial departure deadline" allegedly being promoted by certain activist groups targeting foreign African nationals have further increased concerns over the safety of travellers.

According to the Ministry, while the demonstrations may remain peaceful in some areas, there is a possibility that isolated incidents of intimidation, harassment or violence could occur, particularly against foreign African nationals.

"The Ministry wishes to advise all prospective Ghanaian travellers to the Republic of South Africa to exercise caution in their travel plans due to the ongoing heightened anti-African campaigns and planned public demonstrations in several parts of that country," the statement said.

The Ministry further warned that the current atmosphere could create security challenges for visitors and residents alike.

"It could lead to further incidents of intimidation, violence and attacks against foreign African nationals," the statement added.

Despite these concerns, the Ministry acknowledged assurances provided by the South African government that the reported "departure deadline" circulating on social media and other platforms has no legal basis.

According to the advisory, South African authorities have publicly clarified that no official directive has been issued requiring foreign nationals to leave the country and have assured the international community that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to maintain law and order during the demonstrations.

"The Government of Ghana has taken note of the Government of South Africa's public statement that the deadline has no legal backing and that law enforcement agencies are prepared to maintain public order," the Ministry noted.

The Ministry advised Ghanaians who must travel to South Africa to remain vigilant throughout their stay, avoid protest venues, large public gatherings and other areas where demonstrations may occur, and closely follow announcements issued by South African security agencies.

Travellers have also been encouraged to remain in regular contact with Ghana's diplomatic mission in South Africa, share their travel itineraries with family members where appropriate, and keep emergency contact details readily available.

The Ministry further advised citizens to monitor developments through credible news sources and comply fully with directives issued by local authorities should the security situation change.

The Ministry assured the public that the Government of Ghana is closely monitoring developments in South Africa and remains in contact with the relevant authorities to safeguard the interests and welfare of Ghanaian citizens.

Officials indicated that further travel advisories or updates would be issued should the security situation deteriorate or if additional information becomes available.

The latest advisory underscores Ghana's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while encouraging responsible travel decisions during periods of heightened security concerns.

Although South African authorities have pledged to maintain public order, Ghanaian travellers have been urged not to underestimate the risks associated with large-scale demonstrations and heightened tensions.

The Ministry therefore encouraged anyone planning non-essential travel to remain informed and exercise sound judgment before embarking on their journey.
