Residents of the Ashanti Region, particularly those in Greater Kumasi, are expected to experience improved electricity supply by December 2026 following ongoing infrastructure upgrades by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo).
GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer, Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere, gave the assurance during a briefing to the Ashanti Regional Minister on projects aimed at strengthening the electricity transmission network and addressing persistent power supply challenges in the region.
He said the company was implementing critical upgrades to improve the reliability and capacity of the transmission infrastructure supplying electricity to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Ing. Otchere disclosed that GRIDCo was adding a fifth feeder to the existing four supplying ECG, a move expected to strengthen the power network and improve its ability to meet growing electricity demand.
The company is also upgrading the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, including the Anwomaso-to-Ridge section, to increase its capacity from approximately 360 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.
The transmission line works are expected to be completed in November 2026, ahead of the broader December deadline for the priority infrastructure projects.
According to the GRIDCo CEO, the upgrades are expected to improve grid reliability, accommodate increasing residential and industrial demand, and reduce the impact of persistent outages affecting parts of the Ashanti Region.
“What we want to say is that all the projects are important, but these ones are critical. We cannot wait to complete them. That is why we have prioritised these projects to ensure they are all completed by December,” he said.
The planned improvements come amid complaints from residents and businesses in the Ashanti Region over intermittent electricity outages.
The disruptions have prompted calls for authorities to provide a load-shedding timetable to help households and businesses plan around periods of power interruption.
In December 2025, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition assured residents of Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region of improved electricity supply following the addition of generation capacity linked to the AKSA Energy project at Anwomaso.
The Ministry also apologised after power outages plunged parts of the region into darkness.
The latest announcement builds on an earlier project disclosed by GRIDCo and ECG in July 2026.
At the time, the two institutions announced a three-month project to upgrade the Kumasi–Anwomaso transmission line, with the aim of increasing its capacity from 364 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.
The ongoing works form part of efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and ensure the transmission network can support growing demand across the region.
If completed within the stated timelines, the upgrades are expected to ease pressure on the power network and improve electricity supply reliability in Greater Kumasi and surrounding communities by December 2026.
