Five transport unions declare nationwide commercial vehicle shutdown on November 4

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC and four other transport unions have announced a nationwide shutdown of commercial transport operations on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, over the government’s alleged failure to enforce regulations prohibiting trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways.

In a statement dated November 1, 2026, the unions said the planned industrial action had become necessary because of what they described as the government’s continued failure to enforce L.I. 2519, Regulation 142.

The unions said traders’ persistent occupation of designated bus stops has made it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to operate from their authorised spaces.

The transport groups also criticised what they described as unfair treatment of commercial drivers, who continue to face penalties through the government’s TRAFFITECH-GH traffic monitoring system.

According to the unions, drivers are being fined for traffic violations even when traders’ occupation of bus stops and pedestrian walkways prevents them from accessing designated loading and unloading areas.

They argued that authorities should address the alleged obstruction of bus stops and walkways while enforcing traffic regulations against drivers.

As part of the planned shutdown, commercial drivers have been directed to park their vehicles on Wednesday, November 4, until further notice.

The unions apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the action may cause, saying the decision followed what they described as the exhaustion of other options to resolve the matter.

The statement was jointly endorsed by representatives of five transport unions:

  • Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC

  • Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana

  • True Drivers Union

  • Ghana Committed Drivers Association

  • Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana

The planned shutdown is expected to affect commercial road transport services nationwide, potentially disrupting the movement of commuters who rely on commercial vehicles for their daily activities.

Commuters have been urged to take note of the announcement and make alternative transportation arrangements ahead of the planned action.

The unions’ demands centre on enforcement of the regulation against trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways, as they seek what they describe as fairer conditions for commercial drivers.
