Gov’t to soon name committee for constitutional reforms implementation – Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has disclosed that the government will soon announce an implementation committee to begin work on proposed constitutional reforms in Ghana.

Speaking on Midday News on Joy FM, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that preparations are underway for the next phase of the constitutional review process, following the completion of a report by the review committee tasked with assessing Ghana’s constitutional framework.

His remarks come amid renewed public debate over the powers and independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), particularly concerning its authority to prosecute corruption-related cases without external interference.

The discussion was further heightened after the Deputy Attorney General suggested that addressing concerns about the OSP’s independence would require amendments to the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Responding to questions about the progress of the reform process, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu indicated that the formation of an implementation committee is imminent and will mark the transition from review to action.

“An implementation committee will be announced very shortly to carry on with the process,” he said.

He noted that the upcoming phase will provide an opportunity to address identified gaps within the Constitution and Ghana’s broader institutional framework.

“So whatever defects exist with our Constitution and our institutional arrangements can be addressed when we come to initiate a process for actual constitutional reform,” he added.

The Minister urged the public to remain patient and avoid drawing premature conclusions about the process or assigning blame before reforms are fully underway.

“I think that we should all wait for that process to pan out, rather than prematurely making claims and apportioning blame where none exists,” he said.

When asked about timelines, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu did not provide a specific date but assured that the process would begin in the near future.

“It will not be too long. I’m not able to give you a definite position… but it will not be too long,” he stated.

He clarified that the implementation phase has not yet commenced because the committee responsible for driving that stage is still being constituted.

“No, a committee has to be set up for that to happen, and we are in the process of putting together that committee. So very soon it will be announced,” he explained.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu assured that once the implementation phase officially begins, the government will communicate the details to the public to ensure transparency and awareness.

“When the processes are ready, and the implementation phase is set to take off, the same will be made public for the people of Ghana to be aware of,” he concluded.
