Mahama mourns Ya-Na Abukari II, pledges state support for final funeral rites

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari II, describing the death of the Overlord of Dagbon as a tremendous loss not only to the Dagbon Kingdom but also to Ghana as a whole.

The President made the remarks after receiving a delegation from the Dagbon Traditional Council at the Presidency, where the Council formally informed him of the King's passing in accordance with long-standing traditional custom.

During the meeting, President Mahama extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians grieving the loss of one of the country's most respected traditional rulers.

Paying tribute to the late monarch, President Mahama described Ya-Na Abukari II as a wise, humble, and visionary leader whose influence extended far beyond the Dagbon Kingdom.

He recalled their close working relationship over the years, particularly during efforts to restore lasting peace to Dagbon after years of conflict.

According to the President, the late Ya-Na served not only as a traditional ruler but also as a father figure whose wisdom, counsel, and leadership inspired people across political, ethnic, and religious divides.

President Mahama said the King's unwavering commitment to peace, reconciliation, and dialogue helped strengthen social cohesion and national unity.

The President praised Ya-Na Abukari II for the significant role he played in transforming Dagbon into a symbol of reconciliation after one of the most difficult periods in the kingdom's history.

He noted that through patience, diplomacy, and inclusive leadership, the late Overlord helped foster unity among the people of Dagbon and promoted peaceful coexistence among the various traditional factions.

President Mahama said the King's dedication to conflict resolution and traditional governance would remain one of his most enduring legacies.

He added that Ya-Na Abukari II's leadership demonstrated the vital role traditional authorities continue to play in promoting peace, stability, and national development.

Describing the late monarch as a distinguished national statesman, President Mahama said Ya-Na Abukari II earned widespread respect across Ghana because of his humility, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the country's peace and unity.

He said the King's contributions to nation-building extended beyond the Northern Region, making him a respected voice on matters of national importance and traditional leadership.

According to the President, Ghana has lost a revered custodian of culture, a champion of peace, and a leader whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

President Mahama assured the Dagbon Traditional Council that the Government of Ghana would provide its full support as preparations begin for the final funeral rites of the late Overlord.

He said the state would accord Ya-Na Abukari II the honours befitting his status and enormous contributions to national peace, traditional leadership, and public service.

The President also pledged to work closely with the traditional authorities to ensure that all necessary arrangements are made to honour the late King's memory with dignity and respect.

Concluding his remarks, President Mahama offered prayers for the Royal Family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of mourning.

He expressed hope that the people of Dagbon would find strength and unity as they prepare to bid farewell to their revered traditional ruler.
