National Security operatives allegedly assault retired police officer in Ashanti region

A retired officer of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region has reportedly been assaulted by operatives believed to be from National Security Secretariat Ghana in an incident that has triggered widespread public outrage after a disturbing video surfaced online.

The victim, retired Chief Inspector Seibu Sidi, says he is traumatised and currently receiving treatment for injuries sustained during what he describes as a violent attack at his residence in Trede, a community in the Ashanti Region.

Footage circulating on social media shows a group of about four men dressed in military-style camouflage restraining the retired officer on the ground and allegedly flogging him, while hurling verbal insults. The video also captures bystanders pleading with the operatives to stop the assault, but their appeals appear to be ignored.

According to Mr Sidi, the operatives arrived at his home in a white pickup vehicle while he was away. He claims they proceeded to dismantle his mini sawmill machine, which he relies on as his main source of income following his voluntary retirement from the police service.

He further alleged that his 13-year-old daughter was also caught up in the incident when she attempted to record the scene. He claims she was assaulted and her mobile phone was damaged by the operatives during the confrontation.

Mr Sidi has since displayed visible injuries, which he insists were inflicted during the encounter, and says the experience has left him both physically hurt and emotionally distressed.

The incident has sparked intense public backlash, with many citizens and commentators demanding a thorough investigation into the conduct of the operatives involved. Critics say the footage raises serious concerns about the use of force by security personnel and the protection of citizens’ rights.

Calls are mounting for the relevant authorities to identify those involved and ensure accountability, with some describing the incident as an unacceptable abuse of power that undermines public trust in security institutions.

As of now, neither the National Security Secretariat Ghana nor any official security agency has issued a detailed public statement on the incident.

The case continues to trend widely on social media, fueling national debate over security accountability, the treatment of retired security personnel, and the limits of operational conduct by state agents.
